中国有句成语叫“五十步笑百步”，是说战场上被打败的一方丢盔卸甲，慌忙逃跑。有一个人逃了一百步，另一个人逃了五十步。那个逃了五十步的嘲笑逃了一百步的胆小怕死，其实两个人是一样的，都是逃跑。英语中有种表达与“五十步笑百步”相对应，叫“the pot calling the kettle black”。

“Pot”是用来煮饭的，“kettle”是用来烧水的。两个都坐在炉灶上，经过长年累月的烟熏火燎，变成了黑色。而pot却笑话kettle说它是黑的，岂不知自己也是一样的。这个短语就用来表示某些人在指责别人的时候，自己也犯了同样的错误。

看下面例句：

--Here comes the guy who is always late for work.
这就是那个经常迟到的家伙。

--Aren’t you the pot calling the kettle black? You are usually the last person to show up!
你这不是五十步笑百步吗？你才是最晚到的人呢。
