The Story of Easter
Easter is a special holiday in spring,
It is a christian holiday,
and it falls on a special Sunday in April
Jesus died on a good Friday,
Jesus came to life again and it was on Sunday.
Today Christians go to church and have a special service on easter Sunday,
Many people sing and pray on easter Sunday,
they think of new life in heaven after death.
It is a very happy day.
Flowers, eggs, rabbits, lambs and chickens are symbols of Easter,
they are all symbols of new life.
In some places, people celebrate easter by wearing new brightly clolored clothes in an Easter  parade
Children like the easter bunny and his baskets of goodies.
The Easter bunny likes to fill his basket with colored egges and candy,
then he hide the eggs and candy in many places on the day before the Easter Sunday,
On Easter Sunday morning children hunt for the eggs and  candies,
On Easter Sunday everning, children eat a big dinner with their families.

St. Patrick's Day

Word Bank

R-Man is missing

What you need to know: Why is St.Patrick's day associated with the color green?
Saint Patrick's Day (March 17th), is an Irish holiday honoring Saint Patrick, the missionary credited with converting the Irish to Christianity (in the 400's AD).
Who is St.Patrick?
Saint Patrick was not actually Irish. Historical sources report that he was born around 373 A.D. in either Scotland or in Roman Britain (the Romans left Britain in 410 A.D.). His real name is believed to be Maewyn Succat (he took on Patrick, or Patricus, after he became a priest). He was kidnapped at the age of 16 by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland (I am not making this up). During his 6-year captivity (he worked as a shepherd), he began to have religious visions, and found strength in his faith. He finally escaped (after voices in one of his visions told him where he could find a getaway ship) and went to France, where he became a priest (and later a bishop).
When he was about 60 years old, St. Patrick travelled to Ireland to spread the Christian word. It's said that Patrick had an unusually winning personality, and that helped him win converts. He used the shamrock, which resembles a three-leafed clover, as a metaphor to explain the concept of the Trinity (father, son, holy spirit).
Legend has it that Saint Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland -- that they all went into the sea and drowned. Poor snakes. I don't know why he would want to do this, except that the snake was a revered pagan symbol, and perhaps this was a figurative tale alluding to the fact that he drove paganism out of Ireland.
In America, Saint Patrick's Day is a basically a time to wear green and party. The first American celebration of Saint Patrick's Day was in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1737. As the saying goes, on this day "everybody is Irish!" Over 100 U.S. cities now hold Saint Patrick's Day parades, the largest held in New York City.
Green is associated with Saint Patrick's Day because it is the color of spring, Ireland, and the shamrock. Leprechauns are also associated with this holiday, although I'm not sure why. Leprechauns of legend are actually mean little creatures, with the exception of the Lucky Charms guy. They were probably added later on because capitalists needed something cute to put on greeting cards.
What's good luck on Saint Patrick's Day?

? Finding a four-leaf clover (that's double the good luck it usually is).
? Wearing green.
(School children have started a little tradition of their own -- they pinch classmates who don't wear green on this holiday).
? Kissing the blarney stone.
An Irish blessing to take with you today:
May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow
And may trouble avoid you wherever you go.

Irish fairy. Looks like a small, old man (about 2 feet tall), often dressed like a shoemaker, with a cocked hat and a leather apron. According to legend, leprechauns are aloof and unfriendly, live alone, and pass the time making shoes...they also possess a hidden pot of gold. Treasure hunters can often track down a leprechaun by the sound of his shoemaker's hammer. If caught, he can be forced (with the threat of bodily violence) to reveal the whereabouts of his treasure, but the captor must keep their eyes on him every second. If the captor's eyes leave the leprechaun (and he often tricks them into looking away), he vanishes and all hopes of finding the treasure are lost.
Blarney stone (巧言石,爱尔兰Blarney 城堡的石头, 相传吻此石头后即善于花言巧语)
The Blarney Stone is a stone set in the wall of the Blarney Castle tower in the Irish village of Blarney. Kissing the stone is supposed to bring the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence (blarney). The castle was built in 1446 by Cormac Laidhiv McCarthy (Lord of Muskerry) -- its walls are 18 feet thick (necessary to thwart attacks by Cromwellians and William III's troops). Thousands of tourists a year still visit the castle.

Questions from the story:

1. What are some of the Marsupials in Australia? 2. Is Platypus a kind of Bird or Mammal? 3. What do Koala bears mainly eat? 4. What does Tony suggest Nancy buy as a souvenir gift from Australia?
Nancy: Buckle up, everyone! We are flying to Australia…
Here I am in Australia, Sydney. This is our local *Aussie guide Tony. Let's see what and where does Tony suggest we should go for a visit? Is there anything interesting to look at?
Tony the guide (A native Aussie): I would suggest *Sydney Opera House and the *Harbor bridge. These are the landmark tourist spot in Sydney.
Nancy: Ok, I see, but how can I go there from downtown?
Tony: it’s not far, walking is the best way. And also if you want to get an entire view of the harbor, you can take a ferry (摆渡).
Nancy: Wowwww, what a great view! I love this place. The sky is blue and the people are friendly.
Tony: well you know what? I think it's time to meet some native Australian animals. I bet you will love them.
Nancy: Yeah, sounds great! Let's go!
Tony: Here are some of the famous animals in Australia called *Kangaroos. Those are *Koala bears. They are both called *marsupial. Look carefully you might find a baby kangaroo in mama kangaroo’s pocket.
Nancy: They are so cute. What is this?
Tony: oh Nancy look this is another rare species in Australia, called *platypus.
Nancy: wow, are they a kind of ducks.
Tony: No, they look like ducks but belong to mammals. See how fast they can swim?
Nancy: Yes. Amazing! Ouch!
Tony: Hey, watch out, the tree you just bumped into is native to Australia. It's called *Eucalyptus, and its leaves are the favorite food for the koala bears.
Nancy: The koala bears and kangaroos are so special, but why do you think Australia has owned so many marsupials whereas other countries don't?
Tony: good question! Australia does have a lot of such marsupials, which other countries won't have. If you look at the map closely you will discover Australia is an isolated continent on the South Pacific Ocean. This way it makes the continent unique for secluding (隔离) many rare animals and plants.
Nancy: I see, so Tony what other things are unique to your country?
Tony: The *aboriginal culture in Australia is something unique. So if you have time you can check out the Aboriginal exhibition and buy some Aboriginals' handmade souvenirs (纪念品). They are cool.
Nancy: Sure, and what other things I can bring back as a gift?
Tony: I would suggest *Lanolin cream. Those contain natural oils from the famous Australian sheep. They are highly moisturizing, and good for your skin.
Nancy: Great, I will buy some for my friends.

A Special Soup

Mrs. Simpson lived in a small town with her five daughters.
Their names were Linda, Lucy, Monica, Vivian and Jessica.
One day, Mrs. Simpson invited several guests to her house for dinner.
Mrs. Simpson made the best soup in town.
But this time she forgot to put some salt in it.
Mrs. Simpson put her soup on the stove.
Then she began to sweep the floor.
Her hands got very dirty.
Suddenly she thought about the soup.
She realized she had not put any salt in it.
So she called one of her daughters to help.
“Linda,” she said, “will you put some salt into the soup?
“My hands are too dirty.”
“I can’t, Mom, I’m washing my hair,” said Linda.
Then Mrs. Simpson turned to Lucy,
“Lucy, will you put some salt into the soup?”
“I can’t,” said Lucy. “I have to sew my dress.”
“Monica, will you put some salt into the soup?” asked Mrs. Simpson.
“No, Mom,” said Monica. “Ask somebody else to do it.”
“Won’t anyone help me? Vivian, go put some salt into the soup”
“Tell Jessica to do it, Mom. I’m ironing the tablecloth,” Vivian said.
“I can’t, Mom. I’m looking for my button. I’m not going to do anything    else until I find it,” Jessica said.
So Mrs. Simpson put down her mop.
She washed her hands and salted the soup herself.
Then she went back to cleaning the floor.
A moment later, Jessica found her button under her pillow. She realized she had been very selfish.
So she went quietly to the kitchen and salted the soup.
Later, Vivian began to feel sorry that she had been rude to her mom.
So she salted the soup, too.
Linda went into the kitchen and smelled the soup.
“It will taste better with some salt,” she told herself, so she added some salt.
Later, Lucy thought, “I really ought to help Mom.”
And she put some salt in as well.
Without tasting the soup, Monica quickly added some salt too. “This will make the soup so good,” thought Monica.
That night, the hungry guests sat waiting for the soup.
They could smell it, and it smelled good.
Then Mrs. Simpson put it on the table in front of everyone.
The children’s godfather was there at the table.
Mrs. Simpson gave him the first dish.
He took a big mouthful of the soup.
Immediately his eyes grew wide and his face turned purple.
He grabbed a glass of water and drank it all.
Mrs. Simpson knew there must be something wrong with the soup.
So she took a sip. And she knew.
“Which one of you girls put salt into the soup?” she asked her daughters.
“I did, mom,” said all five daughters together.
“And I did, too,” said Mrs. Simpson helplessly.

The Two Stars over the Ears

Miss Squirrel was a talented little squirrel in the forest. One day she received an invitation from Mr. Fox.

Hi, Miss Squirrel:
We are glad to inform you that there's going to be a concert in the forest tonight.
The concert will start at 8 o'clock.
And we'd like you to sing for us.
Please make sure you dress up for the concert.
Miss Squirrel thought: “I'm going to the concert tonight. But what should I wear?”
The little squirrel came to the garden and saw some grass.
“I can make a hat out of the grass. It will be beautiful.”
Just as she was about to pull the grass, it said:“Don’t pull me! Don’t pull me! It’ll hurt.”
Miss squirrel didn’t pull the grass. Instead, she went away.

Then the little squirrel saw a red rose.
She thought,“A red rose. I can use it as lipstick. It will be beautiful.”
Just as she was about to pick the rose, the rose said: “Don’t pick me! Don’t pick me! It’ll hurt.”
The little squirrel didn’t pick the rose.
Disappointed, she came home.
All this time, there were two fireflies under the leaves. They saw everything that happened.
“In the grass, we play; in the rose, we sleep. The little squirrel didn’t pull the grass or pick the rose. She was so kind.”
The little squirrel felt very sad.
“I have nothing to wear, what am I going to do? Everyone at the concert will laugh at me.”
Miss Squirrel started to worry.
On her way to the concert, Miss Squirrel passed the garden with the grass and the rose.

All this time, the two fireflies were following the little squirrel quietly.
The concert began.
Mr. Fox announced, “The first performer is Miss Squirrel.”
When the curtain went up, everyone was surprised:“Wow, Miss squirrel is so beautiful.
“Look at her pointy ears! There are two green stars! ”
“So shiny! So pretty.”
Miss squirrel sang beautifully. All the stars in the sky came out to listen.
But they were not as beautiful as the two green stars.

Fireflies, also called lightning bugs. These beetles are 0.5 to 2 cm long. Fireflies are named for the cold light emitted as a mating signal.
